History of Poonch :
Poonch a border District of UT of Jammu and Kashmir(India) in Jammu Province has an old and famous history since the epic age and the people believe that Lord Rama and Pandavas had visited this place & It got its name from Maharishi Pulastya, grandfather of Ravana. It is also said that in ancient times, Pulastya worshiped here for a long time and after him, the area was named Pulast Nagar with time, it got twisted from Pulast to Printus, then from Printus to Proons, and finally to the present name of Poonch. It is also called Proons in the Kashmiri language as well also known as Mini-Kashmir because of its similarity in respect of its amazing natural beauty, climatic conditions, and geographical aspects similar to Kashmir.
Poonch is located on 46 46-kilometer-long long Line of Control and Poonch Rawalkot Road is at a distance of about 8 kilometers south of Poonch Town.
It has many beautiful and scenic tourist resorts worth visiting like Loran Valley, Swaziland. Valley of 7 lakes, snow-capped peaks, Meadow Dhoks with colorful tribal life, etc, and has a tremendous scope of adventure tourism that can become a Paradise for trekkers and hikers in the future. There is also a famous and historical holy religious place of Budha Amar Nath Ji where thousands of pilgrims from different parts of the country visit every year to pay obeisance and perform prayers at the Holy Shrine.
It is also written in Rajatarangini, that Poonch gave a tough fight to Mehmood Ghaznavi who invaded the area in 1020 AD. The Dogra Dynasty ruled Poonch State from 1850 to 1947 till the partition of the country took place. Poonch has its reach in Districts Baramulla and Pulwama of Kashmir in its Northeast sides. Among the many beautiful tourist destinations of Poonch listed above, I would like to narrate about a beautiful small tourist resort namely Loran Valley unexplored so far, and hope readers will appreciate my efforts.
It is a small village situated at the foot of the Pir-Panjal Range and about 35 kilometers from Poonch Town in the Jammu Region of J&K-UT(India). It is a beautiful tourist destination with fascinating scenic beauty. Loran Nallah which flows through this beautiful village makes this amazing place more enchanting to the eyes. This place has historical importance that goes back a hundred years when it used to be the Capital of Poonch State under a Hindu Ruler up to 1542 A.D. It was at that time called Loran-Kote and there are still the ruins of Lohar Kote Fort that was once called the Gateway of Kashmir.
Loran Valley is located 35 kilometers from the District Headquarters Poonch five kilometers from Mandi and 64 Kilometers from the capital Srinagar and Jammu. It is the place in the Border of Poonch District and Baramulla District and Tangmarg is towards the North of this place.
Every year a good number of tourists and pilgrims visit this place to enjoy the natural beauty and climate of this destination but there are no hotels and restaurants in the area and the same are available at affordable rates at District Headquarters Poonch. Tourists and people visit this place both in summer and winter to enjoy the scenic beauty of the resort.
Loran Valley has also the historical Shrine of Sufi Saint Hazarat Sain AIlahi Baksh in Battalkote Loran in Mandi Tehsil of Poonch District which is about 39 km north of Poonch Town and about 6 kilometers from the famous township of Loran. The sacred Shrine is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, dense forests, maize fields, and streams where 4 days annual Urs(festival) is celebrated in May by the Management Committee of the shrine with the active cooperation of civil administration, armed forces, Pritam Spiritual Trust and thousands of people from all walks of life from different areas and outside the J&K come here to participate in this festival with great fervor and gaiety and pay obedience at the shrine.

Poonch District is quite famous for many historical and religious places like Poonch Port Noori Chamb, Surankot Valley, Dehra Gali, Nangali Sahib Gurdawara, Ramkund Mandir, Shri Dashmi Akhara Mandir, etc tourists and pilgrims in large numbers visit to perform voyage and enjoy the natural beauty of the destinations.

Nandishool waterfall is a beautiful and scenic water wall located at a distance of about 12 Kilometers from Loran Valley & 6 km from Sultan Pathri. It is a breathtaking and gorgeous waterfall which is about 150 ft high and the water of Pirpanjal mountains is its source. The water comes from Pir-Panchal Falls on a glacier and is about 150 feet high fall. It also remains the main focus of tourists and visitors.

Poonch Fort :
District Poonch is also famous for a historical Fort called Poonch Fort because during the reign of Raja Baldev Singh, this Fort was made the secretariat of the empire and Motal Mahal was the official residence of the emperor. Poonch Fort also called Poonch Qila exhibits unique architecture and it is one of the most important Tourist locations located in the heart of the city of Poonch. Besides, the history of this Fort dates back to the 16th Century.
Gurdawara Nangli Sahib is a famous religious site here which is situated at a distance of about 7 kilometers from DistricHeadquarterser Poonch. It is located on a beautiful small Hill situated on the banks of Drungali Stream and is considered the oldest religious of our Sikh brethren.
Girgun Dhok: The place is known as the Valley of Seven Lakes situated at a distance of 70 kilometers from Poonch Town and the destination witnesses a heavy rush of domestic as well as global Tourists.
Ramakund Mandir is an amazing place that is about 4 kilometers away from Village Mandhar in Poonch. There are three springs known as Ramkund, Sita Kund, and Lakshman Kund. Devotees and tourists visit here in large numbers to pay obedience and enjoy its scenic beauty with pleasant weather.

There is also a big market in the town having shopping malls etc where one can make the purchase meant of essential commodities during the visit. One can visit Loran Valley in the daytime and after spending time with full day there, tourists come back to Poonch Town in the evening for a night stay as there is no proper accommodation available for tourists at the resort.
Loran Valley Distance :
Poonch is about 240 kilometers away from Jammu city and it takes about 7 hours to reach there. Moreover, It is at a distance of about 90 kilometers from District Headquarters Rajouri with two and half hours drive by road. Tourists and Visitors after reaching Jammu from different parts of the country and abroad hire a taxi, cab, bus, etc, for Poonch. The journey is full of adventure and amusement on splendid and well-connected roads. You can enjoy the journey on the mountainous road a lot and have a lot of fun en- route to Poonch. Loran Valley is at a distance of about 35 kilometers from Poonch town and takes hardly an hour to reach there.
