Srinagar is very famous for its mesmerizing natural beauty and many tourist places around it. Srinagar City has a very rich captivating history as many historical events have taken place here since Its inception. The name of Srinagar city is derived from a couple of Sanskrit words namely Siri which means goddess of wealth and Nagar which means City. Therefore this city is famously known as the city of wealth. The origin of the name dates back to the era of Pandavas. When one of the kings Namely  Ashok built the city Siri Nagari. 

Another story attachedd to the history of the origin of Srinagar City is that it is believed that Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire founded the city of Srinagar at a place that is at stone throw  the distance from the current city. It is now called a village named Pandrethan which is situated at a distance of 5 km from the current city and is placed north side of the city. 

 Historical rulers of Srinagar City:

Srinagar was ruled by many rulers in the past like it was ruled by Mauryan Empire till the 14th century whose emperor was Ashoka. King Ashoka was introduced in the valley of Kashmir & it  is also believed that Kushans controlled this province during the 1st century who  used to rule this place from their stronghold over Pakistan and Afghanistan. The king vikramya Ditya from Ujjain ruled over this place and transferred the reins of control to Huns and Nomad tribe in the 6th century. Miharkula was one of the most terrified rulers of the city who belonged to the tribe.

The Mughal rule started here after the 14th century and it was ruled by the Muslim kings. The city was made capital during the rule of Yusuf Shah Check who was tricked to death by Akbar. After his Death, Akbar set up his domination on the city till the year 1707 when the Mughal rule came to an end with the death of their last king Aurangzeb. After this the city came under the rein of the Durani empire and this Empire lasted until 1814. 

After this, the rule of Sikhs was established and Maharaja Ranjit Singh ruled over Kashmir. It was ruled by Sikhs till the British rule came to India till the year 1947. Srinagar was  considered a princely state in British India. It was October 26th, 1947 when the Maharaja signed an instrument of accession with the Indian government.
