As per research, the origin of the name Patnitop has been derived from a distorted form of the original name of " Patan Da Talab" which means Pond of the Princess. It is believed that during the old times, there existed a pond in the lush green pastures of the area where the king's princess used to have a bath daily in this pond. One can see a part of the pond still exists near the Youth hostel. The name gradually over the years changed from Patan Da Talab to Patnitop
According to Historians, it is said that in 1730 AD, the Dogra King Dhruv Deva started his reign over the town and the influence of his kingdom gave a big boost to the cultural heritage of the area whose indelible prints still exist here in the present time.
Patnitop has also a great religious significance because there is a 600-year-old Nag Mandir(temple) situated amidst lush greenery and snow-clad mountain ranges that provide us another evidence of ancient inhabitation of the area. Nag Panchami an auspicious day that falls on the 5th of Shravan as per the Hindu calendar is being celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm at the Nag Temple and people worship the serpent deity.
A large number of people from Jammu Kashmir and other parts of the country rush to Patnitop as it is one of the famous places to celebrate the snake festival. pilgrims worship at the temple by honoring the idols and images of snake deities to seek their blessings. The temple is considered not only the oldest but also the holiest place as per legends belief it is the place where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were joined in marriage.
