Vaishno Devi Temple is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world, with an estimation of  more than 8 million devotees visiting each year. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani, who is believed to have the power to fulfill the wishes of her devotees and bless them as per their aspirations.

The trek to the holy  temple is a popular pilgrimage route, and many devotees walk the 13.5 km uphill journey from the town of Katra to the temple by foot . Some also choose to ride horses or a take a helicopter ride.

Mata Vaishno Devi Ji History :

According to religious Legends and beliefs Goddess Mata Vaishno Devi Ji was born as a princess, but she left her home to meditate in the Trikuta Mountains. She then merged with three goddesses - Kali, Lakshmi, and Saraswati - to become one deity.

The temple has a unique feature where devotees can pass through a narrow cave-like structure called the 'Bhawan', which represents the womb of Mata Vaishno Devi.

The temple is located in a cave in the Trikuta Mountains, which is believed to be the place where Mata Vaishno Devi meditated and attained enlightenment.

It is believed that the cave where Vaishno Devi took shelter is the same cave where the Vaishno Devi Shrine is located today. The cave was discovered by a Brahmin priest named Sridhar, who was guided to it by the goddess herself in a dream. Sridhar then built a temple at the site, which has since become one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in India.

How To Reach? 

The holy temple of Mata Vaishno Devi Ji is visited by millions of devotees every year, and the pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi is considered to be one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism. The temple is accessible by trekking a 12 km uphill route from the base camp at Katra, or by taking a helicopter ride to the temple.

The easiest and most convenient way to reach Vaishno Devi from Delhi is by taking a flight or train to Jammu, which is the nearest major city to the temple. Here are the different modes of transportation you can take to reach Vaishno Devi from Delhi:

1. By Air:

 The nearest airport to Vaishno Devi is Jammu Airport, which is well-connected to major cities in India, including Delhi. Several airlines operate daily flights from Delhi to Jammu, and the flight duration is approximately 1.5 hours. Once you reach Jammu, you can take a taxi or a bus to Katra, which is the base camp for the Vaishno Devi trek. Regular Helicopter and chopper services are  also available for holy Shrine which can be booked online well in advance by the pilgrims for their comfort and convenience.

2. By Train:

 Jammu Tawi Railway Station is the nearest major railway station to Vaishno Devi, and it is well-connected to major cities in India, including Delhi. Several trains operate daily from Delhi to Jammu, and the journey duration varies from 10 to 12 hours, depending on the train. Once you reach Jammu, you can take a taxi or a bus to Katra.

3. By Road: 

 You can also reach Vaishno Devi from Delhi by road. The distance between Delhi and Katra is approximately 650 km, and it takes around 12-14 hours to reach by car or bus. You can hire a taxi or take a bus from Delhi to Katra. Several private and state-run bus services operate daily from Delhi to Katra.

After you reach Katra, you can begin the trek to the Vaishno Devi Temple, which is almost 13.5 km uphill climb. Another option that you so is to take a helicopter ride from Katra to Sanjichhat, which is the closest point to the temple. From Sanjichhat, you will need to trek for around 2.5 km to reach the temple

Best Time To Visit : 

The temple is open throughout the year, but the best time to visit is during the Navratri festival, which is celebrated twice a year in the months of March-April and September-October. During this time, the temple is decorated with lights and flowers, and there are cultural performances and other festivities. Lakhs of devotees from India and abroad  throng to the holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi Ji during Navratras to perform holy voyage  here and seek blessings for peace, prosperity and all round well being.
