 Raksha Bandhan, a bond of Love & protection 

Raksha Bandhan is also known as Rakhi, is a Hindu holiday that celebrates the tie between siblings. when a sister ties a Rakhi around the wrist of his brother, he promises to care and protect her and the festival's main symbol is the sacred thread called Rakhi which stands for love and protection between the siblings.

Raksha Bandhan an unbreakable bond of protection we  all share with our families, friends  and relations is the most important relationship of our lives.  In India many festive s  and traditions support us to nourish the bonds of promoting love, care and protection. Raksha Bandhan in India is one of the most awaited tradition is the festival of Raksha Bandhan that refers to the bond of protection. This holy festival of Raksha bandhan of Hindus is celebrated annually with great enthusiasm, fervor and gaiety  on a full moon day in the month of Shravan as per the Hindu Calendar. 

On this auspicious festival of Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a sacred thread around the wrist of his brother and this emotional and heartfelt festive of Sister's blessings through a Rakshi (Holy Thread) symbolizes the brother'rs pledge to always protect his sister.  It is also important to mention here that there is also a custom of presenting gifts, money  and sweets as a token of love to the sisters on this auspicious day thereby rejoicing the bonds of trust and security in the families.  

Raksha Bandhan History : 

There are many stories about Raksha Bandhan from ancient History of India  and one such popular legend  that narrates an interaction between famous King Bali who was quite generous and the divine couple of Lakshmi and Vishnu. It is believed that king Bali was a disciplined and devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. He had always protected his kingdom due to his pious rule. It is said that Lord Vishnu had to reside somewhere elese temporarily but unable to bear the separation of her his husband Visnhu, Lakshmi disguised herself as a migrant woman and directly went to the palace of king Bali. 

It is further believed that on the full moon day of Shravan Purnima, Lakshmi tied a protective thread around the wrist of King Bali. and after few days she narrated the whole story t the King Bali who was greatly moved and touched by the eternal love between the Gods. 

Later on king persuaded Vishnu to allow Lakshmi to return their divine place. King Bali recognized and respected the strong bond between  brothers and sisters  and ever since, the tradition of inviting sisters on the auspicious month of Shravan to Partake in the ritual of Raksha Bandhan become Customary.  The thread now symbolizes the emotional attachment of siblings and to protect one another as family.  

There is another  ancient religious story  about Raksha Bandhan from ancient History of India that authenticates the religious relevance and importance  to the origins of Raksha Bandhan festival. One such story relates to the great Hindu epic Mahabharata in which it is believed that once Lord Krishna was badly  injured and was bleeding profusely and when Drapaudi came to know about it, she  out of care and and concern for Lord Krishna, tore a peace of cloth from here sari and immediately tied it around the wounded finger of Lord Krishana to stop the flow of blood from his finger. 

Lord Krishna upon seeing this selfless act, was greatly touched by this gesture of Drapaudi, touched her feet as a mark of respect and promised her to protect here for ever in all circumstances. Krishana who took the promise of  protecting Drapaudi fufilled  that during the time of infamous disrobing attempt on Drapaudi in the Kaurava court and  that cloth bandage  came to symbolize  the sacred bond of protection between brother and sister. 

The Atharva Veda, one of the four main Vedas bear numerous hymns about protective bands and amulets. These sacred texts emphasize  the power of bond and protection that is the central theme of Raksha Bandhan.

Solemnity and Festivity : 

Raksha Bandhan festival falls on the full moon day Purnima  as per Hindu Lunar Month of Shravan that mostly occur in the month of August. on this holy festival sisters mostly prepare a plate  with the holy decorative thread called Rakhi, vermillion ( Kumkum), grains of rice, lamp(diya) , sweet  and sister ties the Rakhi a decorative thread  on the wrist of her brother , reciting  lot of prayers for his long life, peace,  progress  and all round well being. Sister also puts Tilak on the forehead of her brother  with kumkum and offers sweets  to her brother and performs rituals of waving light (Aarti).  In return brother offers his sister a gift as a token of his love and promises to protect her all the times with commitment.

Raksha Bandhan a strong unbreakable bond of protection and love between siblings, families, friends and relations continues to remain deeply significant and important in the present times too. This significant festival of Raksha Bandhan is a basically a reminder of duties and responsibility each family and friends have towards one another. The rituals of this festive also signify and highlight the importance of empowering and respecting women folk in which is a strong pillar of the society in this world. 

This festival is also a  strong symbol of eternal ties between the families and friends nurtured by love and protection  with its roots deeply grounded  in the wisdom of Hindu scriptures. 

Now a days, the concept of celebration of Raksha Bandhan has not remained confined to the siblings but has expanded out side the blood relations which include friends, well wishers and relations not only in india but all across the globe who tie rakhis  to celebrate their caring bond. Rakhi Gifts and hampers are also exchanged between the families and friends on the occasion. 

It is most important to say that despite many modifications in the festival of Raksha Bandhan, the essence of togetherness remains the core of modern Raksha Bandhan festivities 

Raksha Bandhan festival like previous years is also being celebrated this year tomorrow i.e. on 19th of August, 2024 with great enthusiasm, fervor and gaiety. There is National Holiday tomorrow that will facilitate people to celebrate it with great pomp and show.
