The word Yuksum or Yuksom means the meeting place of 3 learned Monks namely Latsun Chembo, Nga-Dag Lama & Kathog Lama who came here from Tibet in the ancient time selected Phutsog Namgyal as the first King of Sikkim and bestowed him with the title "Chogyal" which means a religious king who rules with righteousness. Yuksom is an ancient and historical Town situated in sub-Division Geyzing in west Sikkim District it is also famous because it was the first capital of the kingdom of Sikkim and was established in 1642 A/D by Phutsong Namgyal who was the first king of Chogyal of Sikkim. The primary aim of these three Lamas( Monks) was also to perpetuate the Tibetan hold on Sikkim and propagate Buddhism.
Yuksum being the historical and enchanting attractive destination, is situated in west Sikkim and is the perfect place for holidays. Yuksom is surrounded by gorgeous green forests and high Hills that appeal to the eyes of visitors. Yuksum is a large tourist village having a total area of 812.16 hectares and is situated at an average altitude of 5840 ft from the sea level nested in a basin-like valley covered with Mountain ranges. Many people from different parts of the country prefer to visit Yuksom during the summer season when the majority of North India reels under the scorching heat of summer but tourists can experience a pleasant climate with temperatures that are around 10 degree Celsius and rarely cross 30 degrees celsius during peak summers. Therefore heavy rush of tourists is being witnessed during the summer season in Yuksom.
It is important to mention here that people from different parts of the country also prefer to visit Yuksom in the months of chilly weather of winter commencing from October to February to enjoy glimpses of snow-bound Hills and landscapes covered with blanket of white snow. The average weather in Yuksom (Yuksum) in October is quite chilly with an average high temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a lowest 6 degrees Celcius. The average high temperature in December is 9 degrees Celsius during the day and the lowest temperature is about minus 1 Celsius. It is quite cold, and humid and even it rains sometimes during this month.
As far as the climate of Yuksom in January is concerned, it is the coldest month here and the average temperature highs up 7 degrees Celsius, and the lowest temperature remains here at about minus 4 degrees Celsius. The climate in February in Yuksom is cold and humid but cool. The average temperature highs in this month are up to 10 degree Celsius & lowest temperature measures up to minus 2 degrees Celsius.
