Synopsis :
The Martand Sun Temple also called Pandou Laidan is a famous Hindu temple located in snow-capped mountains in the backdrop in Mattan town of District Anantnag in Union Territory J&K- India. It is a site of National importance and one can easily witness the glory of ancient India here & is also a beautiful example of Kashmiri architecture. The Story of the legend Sun Temple Martand dates back to the 18th century CE and it was dedicated to Surya(Sun God), the chief solar deity in Hinduism & it is the only Sun Temple in the whole of North India.
The word Surya in Sanskrit is the synonymy of the word Martand and it is one of the many important sites of Archaeological significance in India. The holy Martand Sun temple was built by Lalitaditya Muktapida, the third Maharaja of Kashmir under the Karkota dynasty in the 8th Century A.D. as per famous historian and writer Kalhana. The pilgrimage village is just off the road that leads to the world-famous tourist destination Pahalgam and the Holy Cave, the Shrine of Shri Amar Nath Ji. The Holy place is about 9 kilometers away from District Headquarters Anantnag and about 64 kilometers away from the Summer Capital of J&K Srinagar 2 hours drive from it. This Historical and ancient temple Martand is about 220 feet long and about 142 feet broad in total with an incorporation of a small temple that was built previously in the ancient times. During the research, this surfaced that as per Jonaraja and Hasan Ali, Skikander Shah Miri (1389- 1413) destroyed this Historical temple in a bid to Islamize the society.

Martand History :
There are many stories associated with Martand and his shrine. As per one belief, the holy place is considered the most important among pilgrims of Shri Amarnath Ji as it is firmly believed that the Yatra is completed only after the fishes in the beautiful spring water of Martand Temple are fed on the way back from the Yatra of Shri Amar Nath. The other legend is that once Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati passed through this Mattan and Goddess Parvati liked the place and asked the Lord to make this place an important one to fulfill the desire of his comfort and accordingly Lord Shiva commemorated the event Sun God who took birth at this holy location.
This is said to be the supreme reality behind Tirtha. There is another interesting story that tells Aditi, the wife of Kashyap, who gave birth to Martand intending to defeat the forces of demons. The image of Martand Ji Maharaj & 7 horses at the temple near the ancient one, the beautiful big spring, and other beautiful temples near the vicinity also remain the center of Visit and attraction for pilgrims and visitors for religious discourse throughout the year.

Martand Surya Temple also known as Mattan Temple is about 64 kilometers away from Srinagar City and it takes more than an hour to reach here from the City. Transport like cabs, taxis, cars, and buses are conveniently available from Srinagar for passengers.
It is also approachable from District Headquarters Anantang because it is a spectacular shrine dedicated to Surya(the Sun). It is about 10 kilometers from Anantnag and takes only twenty minutes to reach here. So far as transportation is concerned, one can very easily hire a cab, Taxi, auto rickshaw, and bus fAnantnagtang to reach here within less than a half hour.
