Gangtok is the capital of State of Sikkim in India which is very famous for its stunning places , natural beauty,  snow-capped Mountains, Valleys, Lakes, pleasant weather conditions, water falls,  glacial lakes, dense lush green forests,  handicrafts and Tibetan carpets, Monasteries and lot more. It is situated in the Eastern Himalayas  on a Tributary of Tista River and Gangtok is a big hub for tourism and is well known for its cultural and religious significance.  It is also believed that during 1800, it was a vital hub on the trade route that connected British India and Lhaba.  Gangtok is bears a stunning view points of Mountain Kanchenjunga, the third  highest peak in the world. The special thing about the Gangtok is that it is dotted with sacred Buddhist Monasteries and is the largest town in the State of Sikkim which is natural blessed with crystallize glacial  lakes and dense forests and stunning view all around the region.

Gangtok lies on a Tributary  of the Testa River in South East- central part of the State and is situated at an altitude of about 56 feet from the sea level. The special features of the Sikkim State are that it is a blend of the traditions and customs of 3 main ethnic groups that live here are the Bhutias, the Lepchas and the Nepalse. The culture here is influenced by  the State's diverse religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism. As far as the climate of Gangtok is concerned, it bears a cold climate quite similar to like that of Darjeeling. The average temperature here remains around 11 degree Celsius but varies from around from around 3 degree Celsius during winter season like December to 17 degree Celsius during the Monsoon Season in July. The hottest month here is July when the temperature here varies from 14 degree to 22.7 degree Celsius. The coldest month here is considered as December when the temperature drops to minus 5 degree Celsius to ten degree Celsius and therefore by and large the climate through out year remains quite pleasant and feasible for tour and travelling. During Summer when the tourist season here is on peak, the average temperature ranges from 12-28 degree Celsius. The best time to visit her is between March to June and October to Febuary because these months are quite ideal and best time to visit here for enjoyment and experiencing the nature in its close vicinity.

1. Lampokhari Lake


This is the oldest freshwater lake lake in Sikkim and is nestled at an altitude of about 46 ft from the sea level and 1120  feet long  and 240 feet wide. This is also called as Aritar Lake which  is quite breathtaking and fascinating &  is exactly boot shaped Lake at Aritar in the Eastern region of Sikkim. This Stunning place is surrounded by  rich green pine forests which make this place very stunning you can visit. The main highlight of this lake is its boating facility  and a pathway which has been constructed around the lake for tourists to look at it from different angles. The pine forest around the lake make it more charming and attracts the tourists at large and a small shrine on the banks of the lake that is dedicated to Guru Padmsambhava adds its religious importance as well. You can also visit Mankhim temple which is positioned right besides the lake.  

 2. Seven Sisters  waterfall :

This water fall in Sikkim is a popular Tourist destination and is made up of seven streams that cascade down a cliff thus creating a striking display of water and light. It is situated at a distance of 32 kilometers from main city of Gangtok in Sikkim along the National Highway to North Sikkim. It has natural pools at the base of the falls and has an extremely beautiful  watching shed Shed and Cafeteria near it. The waterfall  is famous for its captivating beauty, serene surroundings and the refreshing mist that surrounds  the area. The best time to visit this stunning place is after rains when the falls are very impressive and during Monsoon season when the falls are surrounded by a flood of visitors and travelers. You can also experience here a serene setting, refreshing mist and a rainbow display of colors. You can drive North on NH10 towards Lachung, past Phensong Monastery. 

 3. Kanchenchendzonga National Park :

It is National Park which is home to nearly half of India's bird diversity, wild trees, Orchids & Rhododendrons and one third of India's flowering plants. This National Park contains the widest and most extensive zone of stunted forests in the Himalayan Range. The climate of Kanchenchendzonga Natinal Park is pleasant during summer months like between April and May while the monsoon begins here from May extending up to the month of October.  The climate of this stunning place is colder and easily goes down below 0 degree during winters. You can hire a taxi from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim and its nearest Railway station is  New Jaipaiguri Railway Station and Bagdogra  Airport is its nearest airport. It takes about five hours to reach here from Gangtok because the distance between them is about 40 to 50 kilometers. The best time to visit this Stunning place in Gangtok is March to May or September to November to avoid the rainy season. 

 4. Rumtek Monastery :

Rumtek Monastery is presently the largest in the State of Sikkim & is home to the community Monks where they  perform their religious rituals and practice the Karma Kagyu Lineage. It demonastrates the best of Tibetan architecture and is almost the replica of the original Monastery in Tsurpu in Tibet. It is also world famous center for Kargyu Teachings because it has some of the rarest Buddhist religious art objects found in the world. You can visit this stunning Tourist place of global fame by  hiring a taxi or a bus from the airport to Rumtek Monastery. The total distance from the airport to this stunning place is about 34 kilometers and takes half an hour to reach here & it  is about 23 kilometers from Gangtok city and takes less than half an hour to reach here.  The main attraction for visitors here remains seat of His Holiness the Gyalwa karmapa  of the Kargyu sect of Buddhism and just ahead of this Monastery is situated the Nehru Botanical Garden which bears  a mix of tropical and temperature plants and trees as well a big greenhouse of exotic orchids and it a beautiful place to stop for some time. There are many options available here for stay like lodges near monastery, other tourist resorts  which offer modern amenities  in typical rural settings.

5. Gangtok Rope way :  

Gangtok Rope way  breathtaking bird's eye view of the valley below   was inaugurated in 2003 for tourists  that is double cable zig back rope way  can carry about 24 passengers  and covers about a distance of two kilometers  to and fro, This aerial rope way is  about 935 meter long from the start to end point and the complete journey takes at least twenty to twenty five minutes. Gangtok Rope way has three terminal stations namely Tashiling, Namnang  &  Deorali. There is always huge rush of visitors for this and long ques of tourists are often seen waiting near the rope way for their turn.  The cable car station is situated around 100 feet  upwards where you can reach in an elevator. 

6. Tashi View Point :

Tashi View Point in Gangtok is a panoramic viewpoint  in Gangtok that offers views of the might Himalayas, valleys and forests. Tashi View Point is basically located on a hilltop along the North Sikkim  Highway which is about 8 kilometers away from Gangtok. The best thing you can do there is to take photographs, see snow capped Himalayan peaks including Khanchendzonga  Mountain range, Lush valleys and forests, Labrang and Phodong Monasteries and lot many thing. .

One can also visit by road and after reaching Sikkim, it is hardly 45 minutes drive to reach Gangok and it takes three to five days to completely explore, enjoy and experience the stunning places of Gangtok nestled in the mighty Himalayas. The best time to visit here in winters is from mid October to Mid November when the climate here is quite chilly and cozy and may adventure lovers prefer to visit here from Mid September to Mid November and many from March to June. Over all the the best and ideal time to visit the stunning places of Gangtok is from March to June and October to February as these are quite pleasant weather months and ideal time for sightseeing here.
