• The earliest known details  of a New Year festival dates back from about 2000 bce in Mesopotamia where in Babylonia, the new year (Akitu) began  with the new moo after the vernal equinox and in Assyria with new moon nearest  the autumn equinox that is mid September.  For the  Egyptians and Phoenincians, the year began with the autumn equinox (September 21), for ancient Persians it began on the vernal equinox i.e. March 21 & on the Roman  republican calender, the year began  on March 1 but after 153 BCE the official date was January 1, which was continued  in the Julian Calendar of 46 BCE.

However in early medieval times, most of the Christian Europe regarded March, 25 the feast of the annunciation, as the beginning of the New year, though the New Year's day  was celebrated  on December, 25th in Anglo- saxon England. William the conqueror  decreed that the year begin on January first, but the England later joined the rest of Christendom  and adopted March, 25.  The Georgian calender adopted in 1582 by the Roman Catholic  Church, restored January First  as the New Year's  day and most of the European countries gradually and with the passage of time followed the suit that is Russia in 1918, England, 1752,  Scotland started in 1660, Denmark and Germany  started this celebration mostly from 1700 and thus the celebration is January. Many Christian countries  celebrate New Year's day  including those that use the Gregorian Calendar those that use the Julian Calendar. 

It is pertinent to mention here that  most of the European countries that use Gregorian Calendar celebrate New Year's  Day on January first and  the countries who celebrate as per this calendar are Scotland, Germany, Denmark, England and Russia. Many Churches  use the  Julian calendar to celebrate  New Year's day which is called as old New year and the old new year is celebrated in the countries like Canada, Australia, United States and the united Kingdom but the old New Year in  North Macedonia is known as  Stara Nova Godina or Vasilica 

Many people mark the New year across the globe with  religious observances and for example, on Rosh Hashana Buddisht  monks are presented with  gifts on the day and Hindus make oblations to the Gods.  In japan , visits  are  sometimes make to Shinto shrines  of Tutelary Deities  or to Buddhist temples. Chinese make offerings to the Gods of the hearth and wealth and to ancestors.

Americans  also enjoy the traditions of watching the New Year's festivities at the Square New York City  which is being broadcast on TV globally and New Year's Day  that is first January is a National Holiday in the united state.
