Dacghigam National Park : A gem of the Himalayas 2024.
Dachigam National Park is a National park that is situated at a distance of 22 kilometers from District Headquarter Srinagar in District Srinagar Kashmir. It is nestled on the East side of world famous Dal lake and it covers about 141 square kilometers and the Park is rectangular forest 22.5 kilometers long and about 8 kilometers wide. It is actually divided into Lower Dachigam in the west and Upper Dachigam in the East. This park is basically a catchment area of the Dal Lake which supplies water to entire Srinagar.
The name of this National Park has been kept in the memory of ten villages who were relocated in its formation. Dachigam National has been declared as protected area under the care of Maharaja Partap Singh of Jammu and Kashmir in 1910 who created this amazing Park. This Park was solely established with the aim to ensure supply of pure drinking water for Srinagar City and it was later upgraded as well declared as National Park in the year of 1981.
Dachigam National park is a famous tourist spot globally because it is a home of the Hangul, or Kashmir Stag, snow leopard, etc and is famous for its diverse wildlife, breathtaking scenery that provides tranquil setting with lush woods, Alpine grasslands and diverse animals.

As far as flora of this park is concerned, the park boasts of over 500 species of herbs, 50 species of trees and 20 species of shrubs. There are many coniferous forests which consist of broad leaf species, Alpine pastures, lush green meadows, scrub vegetation with deep gullies, waterfalls etc. It is amazing to see that most of the grassland and meadows are covered with colored flowers except during harsh winters.
There are also a variety of wild trees here which include Cheery, Pear, Plum, Peach, Apple, Apricot, Walnut, Chestnut, Oak, willow, poplar, Chinar Birch pine and elm etc.
The main fauna i.e. animal species that exist in Dachigam National park are, kashmir Stag(Hangul), Musk deer, Himalayan Serow, Leopard cat, snow leopard, Kashmir grey langur, Himalayan Black bear, Jackal, Hill Fox, long tailed Marmot, Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan weasel and jungle cat etc.

Dachigam National Park is about 22 kilometers away from the Lal Chowk of Srinagar in Kashmir with a well connected and beautiful road. The nearest Airport to it is Srinagar International airport and from airport one can hire tax, cab, car or bus for this destination. The nearest Railway Station to Dachigam Natinal Park is Sringar Railway Station which is about 32 kilometers from here and tourist can hire taxi or ola for Dachigam National Park from here and it takes hardly less than an hour to reach here.

It is can also be visited again in late September to ending November as during these periods, the weather is pleasant with minimal rainfall thus making it an ideal time for wildlife spotting and enjoying the scenic beauty of the park by also doing photography.
