Untold Story of Vasak Nag Spring Kund.

The famous Vasaknag (Holy Spring)  is also known as "Sarsa" It is situated under the foothills of the High Altitude Mountains and picturesque forests of the famous Pir-Panjal Range at Kund Near Devsar in Kulgam District in South Kashmir of Union Territory of J&K-India. It is a cold holy spring that emerges at the base of Waltengo Nar, a place that was badly hit by Avanchale in 2005 in which 180 precious lives were lost. Every year a large number of tourists from different parts of the country & abroad visit here to enjoy the pleasant weather and eye-catching beauty of the place.  It has become also a big hub for picnickers and many schools and colleges of Kashmir Valley visit here, especially during the summer season for a picnic.

Vasak Nag Spring  History

The word Vasuki in the Sanskrit language stands for "Naga" one of the Serpents of Hindu belief and is a great king of Naga and a gem in his head. Many Naga Chiefs ruled Kashmir when it was a lake. The existence of Holy Vasuk Nag(Spring) has a spiritual & religious history that goes back thousands of years it is believed & said that once a Hindu saint who took Vasak Nag in his wallet came here to irrigate arid parts in winter as there was acute of shortage of water in this dry hilly area. During meditation, this Hindu seer had kept his wallet nearby. some people passed by and lifted it and they saw a big snake coming out of it and running away in the area and this snake which it crept over got filled with water instantly and in a big surprise.

Then this God-loving Hindu seer woke up from meditation immediately and tried to catch the snake but Bagadadi another Muslim Saint who saw this told him to allow the snake to move freely & both of them made a religious agreement there mutually that the spring would bubble for six months only & flow for the specific time. Vasak Nag the holy spring has a particular period of arrival and departure. People have great respect for this historical religious place that has a high spiritual touch.

The Holy Spring is believed to be the ancient Vasak nag pilgrimage of Kashmiri Pandits of Kashmir. It is a big holy Spring that is dedicated to Vasak-the satellite of Lord Shiva and Kashmiri Pandits have great faith in Vasak Nag. The beautiful sacred spring flows for six months and runs dry for 6 months in a year. A weak before it begins to flow in April,(TrithuirTray)every year generally, the wind blows very fast followed by rain and thunderstorm, and people of the area with great respect say Vasaknag (holy spring) is coming, and with its coming large streams flow out of it that irrigate a large area of land in the hamlet and help the 17 adjoining villages in many ways.

The water in this spring runs in the shape of a stream that runs five to six watermills and gracefully flows between willows orchards and turfy banks covered with yellow buttercups, columbines, and forget-me-nots.

The spring runs dry in the Autumn season once the crops are ripe and fit to harvest and then the spring disappears surprisingly till April next year. Accordingly, the water continues to ooze till the end of Bhadrapad, when the paddy ripens, and after that, it suddenly disappears and re-appears at Bhaderwah in the Jammu region and flows there for 6 months & the whole phenomenon reverses for 6 months.

The water of this holy spring is pure and free from insects, bacteria, and germs quite useful for instant digestion. Its color is quite different from the water of other springs of Kashmir valley There is also a beautiful shrine of Sufi Saint  Syed Noor Shah Bhagadadi which is spread over an area of 8 Kanals of land with many Chinar trees & people from all walks of life in large numbers visit this holy shrine to pay their obeisance.

Every year in February a  week-long annual Urs(festival) of the Saint is held with great religious flavor and enthusiasm in which a large number of devotees throng from different parts of UT and outside to hold night-long prayers and supplications as well as pay due respect and homage to the Saint.
